Medical School Application Timeline 2020

(For applicants applying for the 2021 AMCAS Application and starting medical school in fall 2021)​

We are carefully monitoring the AAMC’s updates regarding the rapidly changing environment caused by coronavirus (COVID-19). We will make sure that the info provided here is up to date according to the AAMC. Many deadlines for the medical school application timeline 2020 are TBD for the 2021 AMCAS Application.

Prior to Applying

  • Continue to participate in clinical experiences and volunteer work.
  • Gain adequate knowledge on the application process via this guide or directly from AAMC resources. The more knowledge you gain, the less stressed you’re going to to be. 
  • Make a list of all of the programs you plan on applying to. Make sure to do your research on each program. Remember, the program needs to also be a good fit for you. Feel free to utilize our entire list of both MD and DO med schools in the US. The list contains important info such as the location, avg. GPA and MCAT score, total applicants, and class size. 
  • Find out if you’re eligible for the Fee Assistance Program offered by the AAMC. More info on this under the “Costs” section of this guide. 

Med School Application Timeline 2020 - 2021

January – April 2020

  • Reach out to the professors, employers, physicians, or any other individuals that you plan on requesting letters of recommendations from. The more notice you give these people, the better! 
  • Continue to gather information on the programs you’d like to apply to. Be sure to take note of each program’s specific requirements if they have them. We recommend taking a loot at this complete list of MD and DO programs in the US. 
  • Spend a considerate amount of time preparing for the MCAT if you haven’t taken it yet. Check out an MCAT QOD and get help scheduling out your MCAT study plan. Don’t forget to sign up for your test date at least two months in advance. For more info regarding the MCAT, check out this AAMC link. 
  • By the end of April you should have an outline and draft of your personal statement and work and activities section. Need help with your essays? We can help at a price anyone can afford! Check it out here

May 2020

  • May 4th @ 9:30 AM GMT:  2021 AMCAS application becomes available to start filling out on . 
  • May 28th @ 9:30 AM GMT: The application can be submitted. Be sure to have someone look over your entire application for any errors! 
  • Remind your letter of recommendation writers to submit their letters if they haven’t already.
  • Order official transcripts of all universities you have attended (community colleges included).
  • Register for the CASPer Test if needed
  • Finalize your list of programs you want to apply to. 
  • If you haven’t taken the MCAT yet, be sure to do so prior to June. When the MCAT is taken in June or later, this will delay your application and put you at a disadvantage. 

June 2020

  • June 1st: Submit your 2021 AMCAS application (preferably)
  • June 26th @ 12 AM GMT: Processed applications are send to medical schools
  • Keep an eye on your email inbox for confirmation that all application materials have been received by AMCAS

July – August 2020

  • Submit your secondary essays from the programs that have requested them. Plan to do this ASAP without sacrificing quality. These essays are crucial and we are more than happy to help you
  • Continue to check the status of your med school application 
  • Start to prepare for your interviews. Interviews can start as soon as July and by late August many programs are interviewing. Just like all aspects of the application process are crucial, these interviews are no different. We have med students that have successfully interviewed at many programs ready to help you interview prep, check it out here
  • TBD: Early Decision Program Deadline
  • TBD: AMCAS application deadline for 1 medical school

September 2020

  • Continue to submit secondary essays as they are requested and check deadlines
  • Send letters of interest/intent after completing interviews and getting placed on a waitlist
    • letter of interest communicates fit and interest to attend the school if admitted
    • letter of intent communicates fit and intention to attend if admitted

October 2020 – May 2021

  • TBD: AMCAS application deadline for 8 medical schools
  • TBD: AMCAS application deadline for 34 medical schools
  • TBD: application deadline for 53 medical schools
  • Interviews for majority of programs are concluded in January or February
  • Review admission and financial aid offers
  • Decide on the program you will be attending from accepted offers (Congrats!!)
Fall 2021
  • Your med school journey officially begins

2021 Med School Application Costs

  • AMCAS Fee: $170 (this is for one med school program) all additional programs will be $40 each
  • MSAR Subscription: $28. This gains you access to all up to date program requirements. 
  • Fee Assistance Program: be sure to check this program out. We can’t recommend it enough.
