Wheresoever you go, go with all your heart

As a pre-med student, I know that we all put a lot of pressure on ourselves to be the perfect medical school candidate. Volunteer work, shadowing hours, patient contact hours, maintaining a good GPA, getting involved on campus; the list goes on and on. One thing we forget is that there is no such thing as the perfect candidate.

We all have different paths that will get us to medical school. Personally, during my second year of undergrad, I noticed I was starting to burn out very quickly. I was shocked, I’m not even in medical school yet and I was starting to burn out?? I realized I was doing things just because there were things that I thought would make me look like a better candidate for medical school and not necessarily things that I enjoy.

I started to focus more on my job as a nursing assistant at the local hospital. I work on an inpatient eating disorder unit and an inpatient psychiatry unit. Spending more time at work made me remember that I want to be a doctor because there is no feeling more rewarding than helping someone who is going through a personal struggle overcome it.

Now, I’m not saying that me going to work as a nursing assistant is helping cure patients, but if I can brighten one patient’s day, I know I am doing my job. There is no better feeling than when a patient says they look forward to you coming in to work.

Remember that everything you are doing as a pre-med student is something getting you one step closer to your dream of becoming a physician so, enjoy it!

I’ll leave you with one of my favorite quotes: “Wheresoever you go, go with all your heart.” –Confucius

Never forget you’re doing all of this work because you love it.
