The short answer: AAMC’s 2026 list names 14 medical schools that require PREview, 3 that accept it toward an SJT requirement, and 16 that recommend it. These categories apply to the 2026 testing year and 2026–2027 application cycle for 2027 entry. Program exceptions and school deadlines still matter.

Jump to the required schools or see schools accepting an SJT.

A missing exam score can leave an otherwise finished application waiting. Before paying for another test, identify what each program on your school list actually requests—and when it needs the result.

We checked the AAMC participating-school table and the admissions policies linked below on October 11, 2026. AAMC labels its table “2026” and gives a June 12, 2026 update date. This guide is a dated snapshot, not a forecast of requirements for 2028 entry.

Medical schools that require PREview

The following 14 medical schools appear in AAMC’s required category. The table adds school-specific details where available. Open the linked policy before you schedule, especially if you are applying to an MD-PhD, early assurance, or other special track.

PREview required: medical schools in the 2026 AAMC list
Medical schoolWhat to check
George Washington University School of Medicine and Health SciencesGW lists an accepted testing window ending in August 2026. Check its MD admissions FAQ for your program.
Hackensack Meridian School of MedicineListed as requiring PREview in AAMC’s 2026 table. Confirm your completion deadline with admissions.
Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of MedicineRequired for MD and MD-PhD applicants. Kaiser says scores do not expire and specifies no minimum score.
Nova Southeastern University Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic MedicineThis listing is for NSU’s allopathic MD college. Do not transfer this policy to its osteopathic college.
Saint Louis University School of MedicineSLU describes using PREview after the interview in its holistic review. Its FAQ says a previously taken exam satisfies the current cycle.
Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine at the University of UtahUtah requires PREview for a complete secondary and says applicants must finish it by August of the application year.
University of Alabama at Birmingham Marnix E. Heersink School of MedicineRequired. UAB specifies scores from 2024 or later for applicants starting medical school in 2027.
University of California, Davis, School of MedicineUC Davis advises testing by the end of September in the application year; check its PREview policy for details.
University of California, Los Angeles David Geffen School of MedicineTraditional MD required, including dual consideration. PRIME-LA or MSTP alone is exempt. Score deadline: November 13, 2026.
University of Hawaii, John A. Burns School of MedicineJABSOM’s instructions require a 2026 test. Early Decision and regular applicants have different timing requirements.
University of Massachusetts T.H. Chan School of MedicinePREview is included in UMass Chan’s application requirements. Confirm accepted dates for your track.
University of Minnesota Medical SchoolMD deadline extended to September 17, 2026. The separate MSTP admissions page says PREview is not required for MSTP.
University of Nevada, Reno School of MedicineUNR requires testing in the current application year, by the final October test date. A prior-cycle score alone does not satisfy that rule.
Washington University in St. Louis School of MedicineWashU requires PREview before consideration and lists January 2023 through September 2026 as its accepted test window.

Why this count is 14: AAMC also lists Utah State University College of Veterinary Medicine as requiring PREview. That is a veterinary program and is excluded from this medical-school count. “Participating” also includes schools exploring the exam; it does not mean every listed school requires it.

Schools that accept PREview for an SJT requirement

An SJT requirement is broader than a PREview requirement. When a school explicitly accepts either test, you may be able to meet its rule with PREview or Casper. Check the exact college and program, rather than assuming a university-wide policy.

AAMC lists these three schools as accepting PREview toward an SJT requirement
Medical schoolPolicy and qualification
Michigan State University College of Human MedicineMSU CHM accepts either Casper or PREview. MD, MD-PhD, early assurance, and other tracks can have different deadlines or reporting steps.
Rutgers, Robert Wood Johnson Medical SchoolRobert Wood Johnson accepts Casper or PREview. This is not a blanket policy for every Rutgers medical program.
The University of Texas at San Antonio Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of MedicineConfirm with admissions: AAMC lists PREview as satisfying the SJT requirement, but Long’s interview page still says Casper is required by the interview date.

Long School of Medicine: a policy mismatch to resolve. The AAMC table accepts PREview toward Long’s SJT requirement, while Long’s interview instructions still name Casper as required by the interview date. Ask admissions which rule governs your 2026–2027 application. Do not cancel a Casper appointment based only on the AAMC listing.

These 16 programs are in the recommended category of the 2026 AAMC list. A recommendation allows an application without the score; it does not tell you how much weight that school gives a submitted result.

  • Alice L. Walton School of Medicine
  • Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine & Science
  • Cooper Medical School of Rowan University
  • Des Moines University Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Program
  • Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine
  • Howard University College of Medicine
  • Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans
  • Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine
  • Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine
  • Morehouse School of Medicine
  • Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine
  • Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine
  • SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University College of Medicine
  • Thomas R. Frist, Jr. College of Medicine at Belmont University
  • Uniformed Services University of Health Science F. Edward Herbert School of Medicine
  • University of Oklahoma College of Medicine

Des Moines and Rowan-Virtua are osteopathic programs. Their presence on this list is a useful reminder to check DO schools individually, rather than treating PREview as an MD-only consideration.

Required, recommended, or exploring: what changes?

Read the participation label before making a testing decision
LabelApplicant action
RequiredPlan to supply the score by the school’s deadline. Check whether it is needed before review, interview, or a later decision.
SJT acceptedVerify which tests satisfy the requirement for your program. Choose only after comparing your entire school list.
RecommendedReview the school’s explanation and weigh the time, cost, and opportunity to add another piece of evidence.
ExploringAAMC says these schools use the data to study possible future adoption, not to evaluate applications in this cycle.

The definition of each category comes from AAMC’s participating-school guidance. It is not a promise that every admissions office processes files the same way. For example, SLU describes post-interview use, while Utah ties PREview to a complete secondary.

If all your schools only recommend the exam, first ask what you would gain from taking it and what the preparation would displace. Completing required materials on time should remain a priority. There is no universal rule that a recommended exam is secretly mandatory, or that submitting any score necessarily helps.

Program exceptions and old-score policies

Two applicants applying to the same institution can have different obligations. These examples show why a school name alone is not enough:

  • UCLA: Traditional MD applicants need PREview. PRIME-LA and MSTP applicants need it if they request dual consideration for Traditional MD. UCLA application policy.
  • Minnesota: The MD program requires it, but the MSTP application page says that program does not require or use PREview scores.
  • Kaiser Permanente: Its admissions requirements apply PREview to both MD and MD-PhD applicants. An exemption at one school does not establish an exemption elsewhere.
  • Nevada–Reno: Its requirements page requires a current-cycle exam, even if you have an older score on file.

For a reapplication, record the accepted test years beside each program. Keep the distinction between a score remaining in AAMC’s system and a school accepting it for the current cycle.

When should you take PREview?

Work backward from the earliest applicable school deadline. Write down the last accepted test date, the score receipt deadline, and the published score release date. Those are three different dates.

For example, UCLA’s November 13, 2026 score deadline aligns with the final AAMC score release. It would be a mistake to assume every school accepts that window: Minnesota extended its last test date to September 17, 2026, and Utah says testing must be complete by August.

As of October 11, 2026: the final listed AAMC testing dates are October 14–15, with scores released November 13. Registration for that window closed September 30. If you missed it, contact your program about your application status; do not assume a late-registration option exists. See the official testing calendar.

For a future cycle, verify the new calendar before booking. Our PREview exam guide explains the relationship between registration, test day, and score release.

How schools receive your score

For AMCAS applications, AAMC uploads PREview scores automatically, including a score released after submission. Programs outside that route may require you to release the report yourself through the AAMC Testing Services Score Reporting System. The report includes all scored attempts; this is not a choose-your-best-score service. See AAMC’s score-reporting policy in the Essentials.

The AAMC school table specifically identifies manual reporting for Des Moines and Rowan-Virtua. For Rowan-Virtua, it instructs applicants to use the recipient labeled “Rowan Virtua Schools of Osteopathic Medicine-Stratford.” Michigan State early assurance and UAB prematriculation programs also have reporting qualifications. Confirm the program’s row rather than relying on its AMCAS affiliation alone.

Build a school-by-school testing checklist

Add these fields to the list you already use for applications. Keeping them together is more useful than maintaining a separate list of exam dates with no connection to your schools.

  1. Exact institution, college, program, and entry year.
  2. Required, recommended, SJT accepted, or exploring—with the official policy link.
  3. Accepted test years and whether your existing score qualifies.
  4. Last accepted test date and separate score receipt deadline.
  5. Automatic AMCAS reporting or a manual release task.
  6. Date you checked the policy and any written clarification from admissions.

When two official pages disagree, a useful question is: “For the 2026–2027 cycle and this program, does PREview alone satisfy your testing requirement, which test years do you accept, and by what date must my score arrive?” Save the answer with the policy link.

Frequently asked questions

Which medical schools require the AAMC PREview exam?

AAMC’s 2026 table lists 14 medical schools as requiring PREview: George Washington, Hackensack Meridian, Kaiser Permanente, Nova Southeastern’s MD college, Saint Louis, Utah, UAB, UC Davis, UCLA, Hawaii, UMass Chan, Minnesota, Nevada–Reno, and Washington University in St. Louis. Requirements can differ by program; use the school-specific notes above.

Is PREview required for all medical schools?

No. Schools may require it, recommend it, accept it as one way to satisfy an SJT requirement, or explore scores without using them in current admissions decisions. A school’s absence from this article is not proof that it has no testing requirement.

Does UCLA require PREview for the 2026–2027 cycle?

UCLA requires PREview for its Traditional MD track, including applicants seeking dual consideration for that track. PRIME-LA and MSTP applicants who are not seeking Traditional MD consideration are exempt. UCLA lists November 13, 2026, as the score submission deadline.

Can I take Casper instead of PREview?

Only if your specific program accepts that substitution. Michigan State’s College of Human Medicine and Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson list both options. AAMC also lists Long School of Medicine in this category, but its school interview page names Casper; confirm that discrepancy with Long admissions before relying on PREview alone.

Can I submit AMCAS before my PREview score is released?

Yes. AAMC permits submission before the score is available and uploads the score when released. However, a school may wait for it before treating your application as complete. Plan around the school’s score deadline and accepted testing dates.

Do PREview scores expire?

Schools set their own score-age policies. For example, UCLA and Kaiser say scores do not expire, while Nevada–Reno requires an exam from the current application year. AAMC retaining your score indefinitely does not mean every school will accept an older result.
